Anime Review: Shinryaku! Ika Musume (Squid Girl)

Title: Shinryaku! Ika Musume (Squid Girl)
Genre: Comedy, Slice of Life
Episodes: 24

Nudity: None
Profanity: None
Violence: Virtually nill.
My Rating: 9 out of 10

Review:

Squid Girl is a young girl that comes from the sea with the goal of subduing humanity for their crimes against the sea (I can’t help but agree with her.). She looks mostly human except that, like a squid, she has tentacles she can control as well as other squid like abilities you will learn about as the show progresses.

She means well but is very naïve about how the world works, which get’s her into trouble quite often.

Her invasion begins at the “Lemon House by The Sea” restaurant and accidentally causes damage to a wall. Afterward she finds herself working for the restaurant owners to repay the damage she caused.

Being a ‘Slice of Life’ style comedy, the bulk of the show is about the day to day routines of squid girl and her friends. Chaos comes in the form of squid girl causing trouble in her bid for control of the human race, from her lack of knowledge of the surface world, from adoring fans, or from the local extraterrestrial researchers. . Yes, everyone has a local group of them :-P.

Keep in mind that this is in no way a serious anime and it’s storyline is pretty loose, which is fine. Just don’t expect a serious story about conquering invaders, cause more of the episodes focus on the running of the restaurant than on invasion.

The Bottom Line:

I was skeptical about this one at first, but my brother made me watch it and I found that I loved it. Many of the episodes are just absolutely hilarious and have had me busting a gut laughing so hard.

One thing I want to make a note of. One of the characters in the anime, Sanae Nagatsuki, has an obsessive crush on squid girl. It is implied that it’s simply a ‘fan girl’ type of obsession and is never clarified if it’s a romantic crush or not, I kind of think it is though.

Either way, there are never any kind of sexual situations in the show.

Anyways, it’s absolutely worth a look and I hope you have more success getting the theme song out of your head than I did.

The History of Pocky

The History of Pocky:

What is every Anime/Manga fans favorite snack for show time? Without a doubt the most popular choice is Pocky!

But, where did it come from? Who made it first? What is the history behind it? Well, you are in luck because we are going on a short journey to talk about the history of this fan favorite!

What is Pocky?

Pocky is a very simple snack. Basically it’s a sweet biscuit stick coated in a sweet flavoring.

It was first made in 1966 by the Ezaki Glico company and was known as “Chocktek.” It was a huge success right from the get go, making over 30 billion yen in sales in the first 2 years alone!

Not long after, it’s name was changed to what we know it as now, ‘Pocky.’

It didn’t take long for this snack to spread out from Japan. Within a few years it was being sold in countries such as South Korea, China, and Malasia.

In the years since, the snack has spread all over the globe, now being fairly easy to find even in western markets.

History of the Flavors

At the start, the only flavor available was chocolate. In 1971 the added almonds to the outside and ‘Almond Pocky’ was born. They where joined in 1977 by strawberry.

Now we have flavors such as Marble, Mango, Lemon Cheesecake, Pumpkin, and Kobe Wine, just to name a few.

On top of these, Pocky is known for a wide variety of  limited edition and seasonal flavors.

Starting humbly with one single flavor, Pocky has grown up into a global sensation that will keep Anime fans licking their lips for years to come!

So next time you are sitting down to your favorite show with a pack of pocky, remember the history that is behind that little stick!

Anime Review: Wagnaria!! (Working!!)

Title: Wagnaria!! (aka Working!!)
Genres: ‘Slice of Life’
Sub-Genre: Harem
Episodes: 13

At a Glance:

Nudity: None
Profanity: None
Violence: Minor. Some punching but nothing serious.
My Rating: 8 out of 10

Review:

Working is about a restaurant called the Wagnaria. They needed some extra help and so after searching they found Sota Takanashi to fill the position.

The average episode takes you through a day of work and the many dramas and adventures they have throughout the day.

Much of the humor comes from the fact that virtually every character has some weird quirk that throws it’s own brand of chaos into the mix. Whether it’s a female co-worker that has a deathly fear of men or a cook that knows EVERYONES dirty secrets.

Honestly, I have a hard time choosing my favorite character because they all have their qualities that set them apart from the rest.

Of course, just like any other Anime of the type, there is romantic sub plots going on which typically end up in awkward love triangles and misunderstandings to cause a little more trouble for everyone.

The main down side I see with this show is the fact that it only has 13 episodes. I would have liked to see at least 25 or so, but thems the breaks.

The Bottom Line:

Wagnaria is a hilarious anime that has had my eyes watering many times. I love all the characters and their individual quirks and qualities, as well as the stories behind those quirks.

One note that I would like to add. Don’t hate Sota until you get to the explanation for his quirks. He’s not as weird as is implied at first.

And to wrap it up, it has a theme song that you will be humming in your sleep! No joke!

Anime Review: Neo Angelique Abyss

Title: Neo Angelique Abyss
Genres: Action, Adventure, Fantasy
Sub-Genre: Reverse Harem
Episodes: 26

At a Glance:

Nudity: None
Profanity: None
Violence: Mild fight scenes. No blood or guts, death is rare.
My Rating: 7 out of 10

Review:

Neo Angelique Abyss is a medieval fantasy adventure story, set in a fictional world called ‘Arcadia.’

Arcadia is under attack by creatures called ‘Thanatos’ that can appear anwhere at any time. They suck the energy out of their victims and often destroy entire towns.

The only people capable of fighting these monsters are humans called ‘Purifiers’ who have an innate ability to destroy the monsters. Unfortunately, this ability is very rare and the number of Thanatos attacks is increasing every day.

The only hope for lasting peace is a prophecy about a girl that would have the ability to destroy these creatures at the source and restore security for the entire world.

However, not everyone is willing to wait for this child of prophecy to fulfill her destiny, and they are willing to take dangerous measures to try and destroy the Thanatos themselves.

The Bottom Line:

I enjoyed Neo Angelique’s storyline quite a bit, and found the characters to be well played and each has a unique background to learn about.

Being the first real Reverse Harem I have seen, it took some getting used to because the main male characters all fawn over the heroine.

Also, I would like to point out that this is a perfect example of how a Harem style anime is normally safe as far as sex and nudity, even though one might expect it to be more touchy in this area.

But overall, it’s worth a watch!

I’m back!

Hey all,

I want to apologize for my absence.

I had huge internet issues for the last two weeks and it took most of that time for my ISP to get a tech our here to fix the problem.

I am indeed back now and will be making some posts. I’m working on some as we speak and hope to have them out today or tomorrow if all goes well.

In the mean time, how about I ask a question of any of you reading this, yes you! :)

What is your favorite CLEAN anime? (‘Clean’ meaning no nudity, sex, swearing, etc etc)

Mine would probably be Hayate No Gotoku. I’ll go into detail about this on my review of this anime, but needless to say it’s one of my favorites! :-)

I look forward to hearing your opinions!

Anime Review: Gosick

Gosick Title Screen

Title: Gosick
Genres: Mystery, Drama, Historical, Comedy
Episodes: 24

At a Glance:

Nudity: None
Profanity: None
Violence: Virtually non-existant
My Rating: 9 out of 10

Review:

Gosick is a really cool mystery themed anime. It takes place in the 20′s in a made up European country called Saubure which is stuck down in the Switzerland, Italy, France area.

Our main heros are Kazuya Kujo and Victorique de Blois. Kujo is a transfer student from Japan coming to attend the aristocratic St. Marguerite Academy. He meets Victorique, who is the daughter of a high ranking government official. Due to circumstances surrounding her mother she is basically a prisoner in the academy grounds by order of her father.

Victorique is not just some daughter of a politician though. Despite her very young appearance, she has an intellect that is well beyond genius. She has a particular knack for solving mysteries and puzzles often times solving mysteries well before the authorities have the chance.

The series first few episodes center around mysteries that pop up around the school and surrounding towns. As the series goes on a little it starts to all get tied together in a very interesting storyline.

The Bottom Line:

I greatly enjoyed Gosick and have watched parts of it more than once. It’s 20′s atmosphere is very interesting and the characters have real personality. Absolutely worth watching!

Anime Truth Introduction

Hey everyone!

Welcome to my blog! I know I have an ‘About’ page and such but I thought I should kick off the first post with an introduction.

I’m an anime lover, have been for many years.

When someone that doesn’t understand anime hears that you are an anime lover they think of a couple things. One is that you are some freak that sits and watches Sailor Moon all day or that you watch some combination of blood and guts fighting mixed with porn.

That is the basis for my starting this blog. I’m here to show that not all anime is nasty raunchy violent porn. There is a lot of really good, high quality anime out there that is completely fit for all aged viewers.

So here I’m going to review anime and manga, list favorites, post wallpapers, etc etc.

I look forward to hearing from you all! :-)
