Title: Shinryaku! Ika Musume (Squid Girl)
Genre: Comedy, Slice of Life
Violence: Virtually nill.
My Rating: 9 out of 10
Squid Girl is a young girl that comes from the sea with the goal of subduing humanity for their crimes against the sea (I can’t help but agree with her.). She looks mostly human except that, like a squid, she has tentacles she can control as well as other squid like abilities you will learn about as the show progresses.
She means well but is very naïve about how the world works, which get’s her into trouble quite often.
Her invasion begins at the “Lemon House by The Sea” restaurant and accidentally causes damage to a wall. Afterward she finds herself working for the restaurant owners to repay the damage she caused.
Being a ‘Slice of Life’ style comedy, the bulk of the show is about the day to day routines of squid girl and her friends. Chaos comes in the form of squid girl causing trouble in her bid for control of the human race, from her lack of knowledge of the surface world, from adoring fans, or from the local extraterrestrial researchers. . Yes, everyone has a local group of them :-P.
Keep in mind that this is in no way a serious anime and it’s storyline is pretty loose, which is fine. Just don’t expect a serious story about conquering invaders, cause more of the episodes focus on the running of the restaurant than on invasion.
The Bottom Line:
I was skeptical about this one at first, but my brother made me watch it and I found that I loved it. Many of the episodes are just absolutely hilarious and have had me busting a gut laughing so hard.
One thing I want to make a note of. One of the characters in the anime, Sanae Nagatsuki, has an obsessive crush on squid girl. It is implied that it’s simply a ‘fan girl’ type of obsession and is never clarified if it’s a romantic crush or not, I kind of think it is though.
Either way, there are never any kind of sexual situations in the show.
Anyways, it’s absolutely worth a look and I hope you have more success getting the theme song out of your head than I did.
